THE REBEL JESUS
Jackson Browne

All the streets are filled with laughter and light
And the music of the season
And the merchants' windows are all bright
With the faces of the children
And the families hurrying to their homes
As the sky darkens and freezes
Will be gathering around the hearths and tables
Giving thanks for God's graces
And the birth of the rebel Jesus

Well they call him by 'the Prince of Peace'
And they call him by 'the Savior'
And they pray to him upon the seas
And in every bold endeavor
And they fill his churches with their pride and gold
As their faith in him increases
But they've turned the nature that I worship in
From a temple to a robber's den
In the words of the rebel Jesus

We guard our world with locks and guns
And we guard our fine possessions
And once a year when Christmas comes
We give to our relations
And perhaps we give a little to the poor
If the generosity should seize us
But if any one of us should interfere
In the business of why there are poor
They get the same as the rebel Jesus

But pardon me if I have seemed
To take the tone of judgment
For I've no wish to come between
This day and your enjoyment
In a life of hardship and of earthly toil
We have need for anything that frees us
So I bid you pleasure
And I bid you cheer
From a heathen and a pagan
On the side of the rebel Jesus

Hmm, yeah, that is what generally happens with religion. But here I think the issue isn't just with religion but also with holidays, even non-Christians will celebrate Christmas. It has definitely become a commercialized entity and in that respect it is very much like the robber's den.

I grapple a good deal with this issue myself, but I guess my dissatisfaction is with the world in general. I think when it comes down to it, it has to do with ideals. I have an ideal in my mind of how the world ought to be. Then I am left with having to either try to change the world or change myself. I think it is this grappling with the gap between inner ideals and the outer reality that accounts for much of the random shooting that goes on in colleges and schools. Which, since I have been recently watching Black Lagoon, I would like to link to the arc about the Venezuelan maid, Roberta. Most wars, if you think about it, occur when people start thinking that ideals are even more valuble than human lives. People start thinking in that mode of it doesn't matter how many people die now as long as this will result in a better tomorrow. (Let me know if people get annoyed at my rants ... but this is just the kind of stuff that goes round and round in circles in my mind, cuz I'm a bit of a philosopher/psychologist at heart and I tend to think about these things a lot, to an excessive degree.) However what they don't realize is that they are creating a hell on earth in the present moment and in reality there is only that - the present moment. Roberta became a killing machine to try to make a better tomorrow, isn't that the same thing that ran through Kenshin's mind? (And yeah, since I watch anime, I also link all of my random philosophical babbling into all of the anime/manga that I watch/read.)

So then what? That still seems to leave people dissatisfied. I'm still not sure what the optimum solution is, but I think one thing that helps is your personal relationships/connections that you make with other people. I think it's in the realization that people are neither "good" nor "bad", but simply human and we are all in the end trying to live the best we can. It's best not to start labeling people and to strike out with a sword of judgement, after all I don't think any of us can claim that we are living like a saint.

(Yeah, and though I stop writing ... the thoughts continue to go round and round in my head ...)

Erm, I'm not political in general. I don't vote cuz I'm not a citizen and I think I don't apply for citizenship because I don't want to vote. I don't associate myself with any political party. I see political parties as being rather similar to religious institutions. Some of the stuff almost seems like a brainwashing to me. I'm not interested in taking sides, that's just another way to fuel the problems, I'm just looking for a peace-able way to live.

Do you have a better solution for dealing with the crap in the world? Cuz that's the only one I can think of for the moment. If you've got something better, please by all means share.

Yep, that's what I thought. Solid Democrat. It's a mind set. A way of looking at the world. If you were a Republican you would come away from anime with things like, "You must protect what is important to you" and "I will never lose to you."

Eh.

On a side note, I'm not against Roberta or Kenshin. In fact the Rurouni Kenshin manga is my all time favorite manga and I love it because of Kenshin. I think it is admirable that he fights for what he believes in, but at the same time it really does take a toll on him. It's quite complex, so it would take forever and then some to explore all sides of the issue. But let it be known that I love Kenshin.

Well, I think there can never be an ideal world for all people. Because when one thinks this is the right path to take, there will always be others who will think otherwise. But if you want to change the world, you have to make a stand, otherwise you'll be just a pebble amongst the many pebbles in the seashore, too small for others to take notice. I'm not saying that this is the right thing to do though. I myself dont want it that way... In the end, we just can't help but make peace with ourselves...

"Out beyond wrongdoing and rightdoing there is a field. I'll meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass, the world is too full to talk about.
Ideas, language, even the phrase 'each other'
doesn't make any sense." ~ Rumi

How have you been, Grin?

I Found God Today
by Tommy Q

I found God today through the eyes of a child
He looked up at me and he gave me a smile
He brought me such comfort for which I have longed
Through the eyes of a child I realized I belonged

I found God today in an old woman's face
As she held my hands, I felt God's embrace
From problems in life I knew I would prevail
Which I felt through her hands so old and so frail

I found God today in the warmth of a friend
Who has given me strength for which I can depend
When life had me down and I felt so depressed
I realized through my friend just how much I was blessed

I found God today when I searched for so long
And it's now I realize, he's been there all along
In family and friends and in all who I see
Each day I find God and now I've found him in me

On the other hand there is this one by a friend of mine:

THE BREAKUP SONG
by Nan Aborell

I really really hate you,
I wish that you would die!
If I could just get near you
I'd poke you in the eye.
I used to think I loved you
and now I don't know why.
I really really hate you,
I wish that you would die!

Last night while I was sleeping
I had a pretty dream,
I couldn't see your face too well
but I could hear you scream.
It made me oh, so happy
to hear you in such pain.
I think I'll go to sleep
and try to have that dream again.

Oh yes I really hate you,
I wish that you would die!
Your head is full of garbage,
your mouth is full of lies.
You ought to have a warning lable
tattooed on your thigh.
I really really hate you,
I wish that you would die!

Sometimes when it's raining
and clouds fill up the sky,
I turn my face to heaven
and ask our Father why,
with all his power and majesty
won't he even try
to hit you with a lightening bolt
so I can watch you fry!

I really really hate you,
I wish that you would die!
I'd like to see you hit cement
from forty stories high.
You used to say you loved me,
and then you made me cry.
I really really hate you,
I WISH THAT YOU WOULD DIE!!!

^ i'm guessing this was based on actual experience?

I feel like I'm a scavenger lurking in the night.
Afraid to approach the pit of life,
just scavenging on the sidelines
hoping that the darkness will protect my passing.

I think so. I didn't ask. I like it's universality.
