I have yet to watch that...I dl'd it, but the quality's so bad I don't want to spoil it...on the hunt for a better version. Should be quite easy to find since the DVD's now out in Japan.

Go for it, it's worth the watch. The Ponyo song is pretty addictive.

Good call, it's beautiful. If you pay attention to the backgrounds you'll see all sorts of surprising colors used. Super impressive.

Burn some stuff, whjabba. That way you free up hard drive space and still get to keep the stuff. That makes it a lot easier to decide.

You obviously haven't seen the English dub yet, jjjynx. Since Disney had a couple of their singing kids involved, they made a techno/hip-hop English version of the song. You can find it easily enough on YouTube, but brace yourself, it's painful.

Ok............I went to take a look off Youtube of the song. THAT, is not an addictive song. And the Lyrics hurts. But, it's probably not bad considering this was meant for audience who had no clue of the Japanese version.

No, that was about as !@#$ing awful as it could be. It totally clashes with every second of that film - it just doesn't fit. Even taken out of the context of the film, it still sucks.

I just got back from finally seeing the English dub. It wasn't nearly as bad as I feared (except for that %^&* song). Of course I have no clue about the original Japanese, all I have to compare it to is the fansub I have which was full of Engrish. The picture quality was so much better it was like I was seeing it for the first time. Some of the dialogue was better because it explained some things better but at other points they changed it for no apparent purpose.

Betty White and Lilly Tomlin weren't nearly as good playing the Grannies as I had expected. The Japanese VAs were much better.

The original Japanese Ponyo song at the end isn't even there but they do a fairly good hetero version of it in English before breaking out the techno/hip-hop crap.

All in all, I thought that they did a pretty good job of it.

I was wrong to say I saw it. I only heard it. I suppose it would hurt me real bad if I saw it with the movie.

It was over the ending credits just like in the original. Thank the gods they didn't put it at the beginning. I love all of Joe Hisaishi's music for this.

I forgot to mention that I found a third Ponyo music cd. It's the Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea Maxi CD. It has Nozomi Ohashi's original demo of the Ponyo Song. It's even cuter than the movie version. There's also a karaoke version. So that makes the OST, The Image Album and the Maxi that I have. I suppose that there will be an American OST too.

Hmm. Ponyo watching completed.

Unfortunately I must say that I wasn't actually very impressed. I mean, ok it was fun, and loaded with cute and amusing scenes. I also like Toki's character a lot: she makes me think of Granny Weatherwax.

But it lacks any kind of direction, and then it just fell apart:

SPOILER WARNING! (don't know how to get the picture)

"Now you will face the great trial of love!"
"Did you know she used to be a fish?"
"Yeah."
"Will you love her forever even if she has no magic?"
"Yeah, ok."
"THE WORLD IS SAVED!!!!!!"

general rejoicing, angels decend from heaven, demons rise from hell, much ado with turntable etc.

THE END

Just my two bits...

Don't forget the fact that Ponyo most likely killed a whole lot of people by raising the oceans and making them all crazy... but it's cool, they have the love of 5 year olds!

(I will totally admit that I left my brain at the door for that movie and pretty much spent the whole movie going "AWWWWW!!!")

You're not supposed to watch it seriously, wjabba.

Smiling through the whole thing and getting brainwashed by the song and animation was the main gist of things. If you want to be mind-fugged and set you thinking I suggest you give Mind Games, Paprika and Sky Crawlers a try instead.
