Share your favorite quote!
I like to collect quotes so I thought I'd make a quote thread where people can share and discuss quotes that they like.
Er, I guess this would be the opposite of Quote of the Week and more like famous quotes.
Here's my most recent find:
"Amateurs focus on rewards. Professionals focus on risk."
-Harald Anderson
This one spoke to me because I'm currently undergoing some dilemmas related to future career path and I'm worried about taking risks. I can't tell if I'm taking a reasonable risk or just being plain stupid. This quote makes me feel better about my decision.
And another:
"The truly creative mind in any field is no more than this: A human creature born abnormally, inhumanly sensitive. To him... a touch is a blow, a sound is a noise, a misfortune is a tragedy, a joy is an ecstasy, a friend is a lover, a lover is a god, and failure is death. Add to this cruelly delicate organism the overpowering necessity to create, create, create -- so that without the creating of music or poetry or books or buildings or something of meaning, his very breath is cut off from him. He must create, must pour out creation. By some strange, unknown, inward urgency he is not really alive unless he is creating."
-Pearl S. Buck, novelist, Nobel laureate (1892-1973) |

Wow those are really great quotes. Makes me wonder, what is your chosen career path?
The second quote makes me think of an artistic path. And then you're studying linear algebra. Hmmmm. You remind me of myself. The oxymoronic nature of it all. There was an extensive discussion on this in either the intro thread or the welcome thread.
Anyway, my favorite quotable person is Albert Einstein.
"Any intelligent fool can make things bigger, more complex, and more violent. It takes a touch of genius and a lot of courage to move in the opposite direction."
I remember I used to quote my Precalculus teacher, because he had an extensive english vocabulary, but an extremely heavy Japanese accent, you could find little quotes in my notes from class. He was pretty hilarious. _________________ nodes aka GTBaka

I love Einstein too!
"Common sense is the collection of prejudices acquired by age 18."
- Albert Einstein -
But I do find it odd how people so smart can have such messed up personal lives.
I am also a fan of Khalil Gibran's work.
"The reality of the other person
is not in what he reveals to you,
but in what he cannot reveal to you.
Therefore, if you would understand him,
listen not to what he says
but rather to what he does not say."
~ Khalil Gibran
I also like Emily Dickinson, but that's poetry and not really a quote. Maybe I should start a poetry thread. |

"I'm not young enough to know everything." - James Matthew Barrie
"After all who of us in our lives hasn't set fire to some great public building or other..." - Graham Chapman
"A communist is someone who reads Marx. An anti-communist is someone who understands Marx." Ronald Reagan
Mon Dieu! Où est mon drapeau blanc?
“The object of life is not to be on the side of the majority but to escape finding oneself in the ranks of the insane.” – Marcus Aurelius
It looked so good out this morning I decided to leave it out all day. - William Gaddis, "The Recognitions"
“Those who lack the courage will always find a philosophy to justify it. ” - Albert Camus
"He is a very shallow critic who cannot see an eternal rebel in the heart of a conservative." - G.K. Chesterton
"There is only one basic human right, the right to do as you damn well please. And with it comes the only basic human duty, the duty to take the consequences." - P. J. O'Rourke
"Now, while I spend all my days working, I polish the shards of my dream." - NANA _________________

I like Gilbert K. Chesterton too, "Love means to love that which is unlovable; or it is no virtue at all."
More by Chesterton:
“If a thing is worth doing, it is worth doing badly.”
"Most probably we are in Eden still. It is only our eyes that have changed."
I also like Marcus Aurelius although I am not as familiar with his writing.
Eckhart Tolle wrote: | "Accept whatever comes to you woven in the pattern of your destiny, for what could more aptly fit your needs?" This was written 2,000 years ago by Marcus Aurelius, one of those exceedingly rare humans who possessed worldly power as well as wisdom. |
"To be able to find humour, in the midst of tragedy, is the art of living consciously." I'm not sure who came up with that one but I like it a lot.
"Only two things are infinite, the universe and human stupidity, and I'm not sure of the former." - Albert Einstein
"Be content with what you have; rejoice in the way things are. When you realize there is nothing lacking, the whole world belongs to you." - Lao Tzu, from Tao Te Ching
"When I let go of what I am, I become what I might be." - Lao Tzu
"The supreme happiness of life is the conviction of being loved for yourself, or, more correctly, being loved in spite of yourself." - Victor Hugo |

Those are all good, MNB. I ran across some good ones lately but now I'm afraid to post them where MNB can read them. _________________

Eh? What'd I do?

Twice now, you've made go into lengthy explanations of quotes that I thought straight forward. _________________

Oh. Er, aren't you happy to have spread your knowledge and wisdom?
I'll try to be less stupid, but I'm not sure if that's possible.
But yeah, if you say something that I don't understand, in quote form or not, I'm probably going to pester you until you explain it.
I wouldn't be able to give an adequate response to what someone says unless I know for sure I've correctly understood what the other person was saying. |

You have no idea how hard I have to work to be knowledgeable and wise. Creating that illusion really wears me out and I can't do it on a continuing basis. _________________

Ahh, I didn't realize I was making you work so hard. Gomen nasai.
And now I'm just rambling ...
I also find communication to be tiring, so in many instances I just stop trying to communicate.
I don't know what's worse, to have my words be misunderstood or to have people not even bother to try to understand.
Oh! We could set up a quota system, I can only pester you about what you say once a month or something like that. I used up one for August and one for September, so I won't be able to annoy you again until October =) |
