The kidnapping of Orihime was always shown in the opening theme, so it isnt that surprising? 
As far as the battle goes, I hated Ichigo's weakness when his mask was torn, he would have thrown a few moves in...but instead, he was beaten to a pulp. Rukia's shikai was much better... Hehe

Hahaha yeah, it was shown in the opening. I believe the next episode is rumored to have a new opening by Asian Kung-Fu Generation~ But um, I have known about Orihime's capture for a long time now. ^^; So no, it wasn't surprising at all. Actually, with as much attention as Ulquiorra gave her it wasn't surprising even in the manga that Aizen decided to have her.
Anyway, Ulquiorra will explain his reasons for his actions in the future (to Nnoitra) so it will make sense then... Unless you want me to explain why he gave her the 12 hours...
Ah well, maybe you'll figure part of it out next episode, if it isn't a filler. *edit* And from the looks of episode titles it isn't~ Yayyy!

Near as I can tell, they have already explained why they kidnapped Orihime. Her power is something different that they have never seen before. They want to study and acquire it.
