The first ever American Anime Awards presented tonight at the New Yorker hotel in New York City in conjunction with the New York Comic Con. The winners were as follows:

Best Cast: Fullmetal Alchemist
Best Manga: Fruits Basket
Best Male Actor in a Comedy: Dave Wittenberg (Zatch Bell)
Best Actress in a Comedy: Debi Derriberry (Zatch Bell)
Best Theme Song: Rewrite (Fullmetal Alchemist)

Best Anime Comedy: FLCL
Best Actress: Mary Elizabeth (Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex 2nd GIG)
Best Anime Short Series: FLCL
Best Anime Long Series: Fullmetal Alchemist

Lifetime Achievement Award: Peter Fernandez.

What kind of morons were allowed to vote in this thing? FLCL and Mary Elizabeth McGlynn were the only things they got more or less right.

I looked into it.

Here is a link to the Con's website. Looks like it was a kick ass convention.

From their press release page:
Quote:
The American Anime Awards ballot will be developed by both industry representatives and independent anime experts. Each producer-distributor of anime in North America will have an opportunity to offer up to two candidates for consideration in each category. An equal number of anime experts working independently will offer their own nominees. The combined ballot will be assembled by Milton Griepp, publisher of the industry Website ICv2.com, who is acting as Awards Committee Chairman and will oversee the online polling.

"Which top people?" "Top ... people."

Here is their ballot:
Quote:
Over the month of January, North American anime fans voted on a web ballot devised by the most prominent anime and manga companies working in North America, including VIZ Media, TOKYOPOP, Media Blasters, Geneon, FUNimation, Del Rey, CPM, Bandai, and ADV Films. Representatives from Anime Insider magazine and the popular internet fan sites AnimeNewsNetwork.com and AnimeOnDVD.com also contributed nominees to the ballot. The pop culture business news site ICv2.com oversaw the online voting.

The top five finalists for the first American Anime Awards are as follows:

Johnny Yong Bosch (Akira, Bleach, Eureka 7)
Crispin Freeman (Hellsing Ultimate, Noein, Revolutionary Girl Utena)

Meh. It's a pretty predictable list. Right from when I first heard about it, it sounded boring and I didn't have a lot of interest. Most anime magazines are capable of coming up with something better than this.

I agree. I like what comes up in the magazines much more. Plus, I think these awards should be for what was dubbed/licensed this year. Akira definitely wasn't.

Advent Children isn't anime. That pisses me off. How can a CG movie win for an anime movie? To me, anime is in whole or mostly hand drawn, 2D animation (sometimes with added CG characters like Tachikoma :3 ) and that's it. Rawrg.

Hellsing Ultimate's packaging was awesome. I liked the steel case but I didn't want to pay extra for it >.>;;

I'm more upset with what isn't on the list. How could they possibly not even mention Cowboy Bebop? It's the gold standard to which all anime aspires. How is it that not one of Miyazaki's works is mentioned for Feature Film? His worst film would beat everything on that list.

With a few exceptions, this thing looks like a political election where they let you choose between crap and $h!+. I wonder how this would have turned out if write-ins had been allowed.

Reality Check: I doubt if much of anything at all is "hand drawn" these days. It's all done on computers.

Yes, most of animes today are done with computer...even miyazaki's fame animations have turned digital...the first experiment he did with digital was Princess Mononoke. And one example of fully CGed anime is Appleseed along with one more anime...uuh...forgot the name...something about robots too.

WTF?!?! RK owned Samurai Champloo?!?! Yeah, RK is nice but SC IS WAY BETTER THAN RK not to mention the creator of CB!!! So does that means unlicensed animes never get a chance to enter this..this...vote thingy?

I'm talking about hand drawn not colored. I know they don't use cels anymore (bummer. I love them.) but the drawings are at least done by hand first--the line drawings, and inked on the computer. Right? o.o;

Samurai Champloo is licensed. o.O;; I'm surprised they could only enter 2 anime though. I would think everything is considered. At least, it should be considered. There are tons of good things that aren't well known, I should think. I mean, Babel won tons of awards. I'd never heard of it, and now I've been told that it's really boring and not to watch it. >.>;; I don't understand....

I can see how Advent Children could loosely be considered anime - it's an animated japanese movie. But it's still not very good.

Akira might have recieved a re-release or something, I'm not sure.

Advent Children was a very well done cg anime. The story only made any sense if you have played FFVII all the way through.

If Akira has been re-released in recent years, I haven't seen it on the shelves anywhere.

Yeah, Dread, this seems to include only American licensed anime, hence the name American Anime Awards. We also have to keep in mind that this was done by a comic book con, not even a manga con. I'd still like to know who these "top people" of anime who came up with this ballot are. Probably whoever these X-Men junkies knew who have watched some anime.

I'm not surprised... Well, you guys know how voting is done nowadays. Old ones are lost, and the latest in trend are the one who win. I would suppose that Fullmetal Alchemist is perhaps the most popular anime to hit the TV screens in the US just lately...

And as to unliscenced anime, I guess they wouldn't be voted since they're still aren't shown in American television... Blue_PDT_01_01

Which would all mean that... THEYRE MISSING TONS OF BETTER ANIME...

In fairness to RK, its pretty much popular in not-so-anime-inclined countries like here. I mean, you can ask anyone here about RK, and they would know. Wouldnt say that much for SC though....
