Let's start with the basics. Derivatives. A derivative is a rate. Or a slope of a curve.
A little notation. Anytime you see d/dx(....) in front of a number or a function within the paranthesis, it denotes taking the derivative of the number or function. Note that, the parenthesis are my notation for simple reading on this message board. Usually you see a d with a dx beneath and the function after.
Okay! So let's move on to our very first derivative. The derivative of a constant. This is very simple. Because the answer is always the same. Zero!!! That's right, the slope of a constant line has no slope, or is a slope of zero.
Examples.
d/dx(3) = 0
d/dx(623,420) = 0
Look forward to next time when we can introduce a variable x, to create a function of x! In particular, scalar multiples of x. See you next time! _________________ nodes aka GTBaka

I'm downright dyslexic when it comes to math. It took me three years to get through algebra and I don't remember a thing from it now. _________________

I'm having this issue with my calculator. Everytime I divide by zero I get this weird 'E' thingey... is this mysterious 'E' character a real number?? You decide. 'E'... the undiscovered number? Have our math teachers been lying to us? _________________ Mugen Rocket!!! |

You just need to upgrade to a real calculator.
HP-49!!!
Then it will reveal the secret of dividing by zero. _________________ nodes aka GTBaka

So if I have a million dollars and I decide that I'm going to divide it up with nobody, does that mean that I get to keep it all or does the government get it? _________________

Derrivative Lesson #2
The Power Rule - d/dx(x^n) = nx^(n-1)
*Note: For any y=f(x), dy/dx can also be noted as f'(x).
IronPoke - is it a lower case or upper case "e"? A lower case "e" is the base for natural logarythms or ln. e=2.718 (appoximately), though I doubt that what you're getting is that specific "e". We all know you can't divide by zero. Maybe it's just your calculator. _________________ Life is a game of chess, upon the end of which, both kings and pawns are placed in the same box. |

Actually, dividing any real by zero gets you infinite...or near enough for practical purposes. and dividing by infinite gets you zero...the fun comes when 0/0, 0/infinite, infinite/0, and infinite/infinite show up...and when you realize one infinite can be bigger than the other....and they say math is the basis of logic. |

However, after understanding math, infinity, and logic, we still have yet to grasp the truth behind the greatest mystery of our universe... women.
....
and FallenAngel, the nature of this E symbol still eludes me, for after punching in several random divisions by zero in rapid succession, a red boxing glove popped out of thing and punched me in the face. _________________ Mugen Rocket!!! |

hot dang you guys are accelerating the calculus thread.
Hmmm. Fine.
I give you differential equations.
Solutions of Second-Order Linear Homogeneous Equations with Constant Coefficients.
If we restrict our attention to equations of constant coefficients
ay"+by'+cy = 0
and solve the equation by assuming that y = e^(rt) is a solution for some value of r. We find r by subbing this solution into this mofo called the ODE. Ordinary Differential Equation. With y'=re^(rt) & y" = r^2*e^rt we get this baby:
ar^2*e^rt+bre^rt+ce^rt = 0.
Use your algebra kiddies!
e^rt*(ar^2+br+c) = 0.
Ignore that crap in the front and just solve the characteristic equation.
And then to tie up the loose ends, get the roots for r. Using your standard quadratic forumula.
voila. Bon Apetit. _________________ nodes aka GTBaka

Some of the male units come with an additional switch.
There is a problem with overheating so this switch is wired to a relay that shuts it off after ten minutes and it can't be turned back on for at least fifteen - or much longer in older models. _________________

math proof for women being evil.
now, all men can attest that women require both time and money
women = time x money
and we all know time is money (time = money), therefor
women = money x money = money^2
and it has been reported that money is the root of evil
money = evil ^ (1/2) ....meaning
women = evil ^((1/2) x 2) = evil
